The fires of the Bethany to Angaston Trail

It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s winter, it’s no fun. Right? No way! We’re big fans of this wintery weather and for very good reason. Not only is this record rainfall incredible for the vines, it’s the best time to cozy up in front of a fire and just relax. So without further ado let me introduce you to the fires of the Bethany to Angaston Trail:

First up – to our newest member of the trail, Chateau Tanunda. With over 125 years of Barossa winemaking history, the fire-side couches at Château Tanunda cellar door are the perfect place to taste a selection of premium Barossa wines of world acclaim.

Down the road a little (and directly across the vines as the crow flies) is Turkey Flat Vineyards. The quaint 1860s bluestone butchers shop turned Cellar Door is kept warm and inviting by the slow combustion fire. Grab a spot on a bar table by the fire, warm your tastebuds with spicy, red fruited Grenache or elegant Shiraz and their personal winter favourite, Mataro, play a game of dominoes or noughts and crosses – perhaps even enjoy a bite to eat with a little board of lachsschinken and cheese.

Nestled in those fog-covered hills up the road is Bethany Wines. Enjoy the stunning views from the comfort and warmth of your spot by the fire as you taste through their impressive range of exceptional varietal and single vineyard wines.

The 100 year old wood fired oven is the centre point for your next stop at Rusden Wines. The long tasting bench is never more inviting as on the weekends when this beauty is roaring and is the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy Rusden’s cheekily charming hospitality and delicious wines.

At Taste Eden Valley – the home of 16 artisan winemakers from the (even chillier!) Barossa high country you can trust they know a good fire. Put your feet up by the fire and enjoy the premium wines or for something a little different a chocolate wine tasting and hot chocolate tasting for the non-drinker (insert sigh of contentment here)

Further into Angaston is to the majestic Yalumba complete with their comfy couches and grand fireplace. The perfect location from which to experience their winter Grenache tastings, explained no better than by Yalumba themselves: “Our Grenache wines are wonderfully complex, each with its own personality and unique expression of Barossa terroir. Time now to check in to your accommodation – walking into the beautiful old barn of Lanzerac Country Estate is one incredibly welcoming experience as you are greeted by the massive old fire, surrounded by comfy couches to slump and slurp in. We have it on good authority that the port keg never runs dry at Lanzerac – and as an added bonus, there’s Wesley, their gorgeous dog who might just move from his pole position by the fire for a pat.

Or if you’d prefer your own personal fire in your accommodation… then Barossa Vineyard Cottages are your best bet. Their Norwegian ‘pot belly’ fireplaces are set up ready for your homecoming after a long day out of eating and drinking throughout the Barossa. Relax and unwind in front of a parade of flames that heat every cold limb within minutes. Pair this with a tall glass of red and your cheeks are guaranteed to glow!”

It’s hard to believe it, but vintage time is upon us again. It’s the perfect time to come and experience the Barossa as the area is buzzing with activity. Here at Thorn-Clarke wines we also have some exciting news to coincide with vintage. We are now open on Sundays! Now you can visit us during the week from 9am – 5pm and Saturdays / Sundays from 11am – 4pm. We are also doing some delicious regional platters on weekends. Taste Eden Valley is home to over 15 different wine producers who don’t have a cellar door. With over 70 single vineyard limited release wines we change our tasting list each week so you never get tired of our range. Summer months bring long hot days and there is no better way to relax with a refeshing glass of Riesling. We have a selection of 23 Rieslings to sample at our tasting room in Angaston – open 7 days 10am – 5pm.

Built in the early 1900’s, Hart of the Barossa’s Old Bar’n is located in the midst of our vineyard where our wine is created.

We offer wine tastings in our Old Bar’n on the first Saturday of the month (except during Vintage) Feb-March.  Next Open: Saturday 2 April – 11am til 4pm

Each season we pride ourselves in showcasing the best of what that season has to offer. Cheese often develop better in different weather conditions, so each season we will present this on a platter just for you! Watch out for our other experiences, Cheese & Wine Flight (4 cheeses, 2 wines) and the Brie VS Camembert Taste Off (to help you understand the true differences between the two rival cheeses). Each day at 11am we offer a free Halloumi tasting, so pop in and see what all the squeaky fuss is about!
